What is a doula and what do they do?

Doula is a Greek word that means "a woman who serves." And I am here to do just that - to support you and your partner. I am for YOU because I believe you deserve to have the best care possible.

I believe doulas make a difference because: 1. Doulas help prepare you. The more information you have and educated you are, the better prepared you are to make decisions, to know what you are getting into and having a better outcome. I would suggest taking an childbirth class. 2. Doulas provide emotional and physical support. Birth is an emotional and physically demanding experience. Hiring a doula provides you with the support you need to do this well through suggesting positions, affirmations, breathing techniques, etc. 3. Doulas help you feel positive about your birth experience. Research shows that that a woman's satisfaction with her birth experience is not dependent on how labor went, but how supported and empowered she felt. Doulas help make this possible.

A couple things you might be thinking:

1. My partner is my continuous support, so why would I need a doula?

My answer: The doula does not replace or take over the partners role. But more importantly, the doula makes it possible for the partner to be 100% available to your needs. During my birth, my doula relieved back labor for almost the entire labor so that my husband could be in front of me to lean on, look to and most importantly be in front of me encouraging me.

2. I am going to give birth in a hospital and get an epidural as soon as I can. My answer: I know a lot of people put together unmedicated birth and home birth with a doula, which definitely happens. But in a lot of cases, having a doula in the hospital with you, even if you get an epidural is incredibly helpful. Doulas can continue to offer encouragement, relieve the partner if needed to sleep and suggest helpful positions.

There are so many reasons to hire a doula.

From a study done by DONA International (https://evidencebasedbirth.com/the-evidence-for-doulas/) these outcomes were found:

For most of these outcomes,* the best results occurred when woman had continuous labor support from a doula— someone who was NOT a staff member at the hospital and who was NOT part of the woman’s social network. When continuous labor support was provided by a doula, women experienced a:

  • 31% decrease in the use of Pitocin*

  • 28% decrease in the risk of C-section*

  • 12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth*

  • 9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief

  • 14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery

  • 34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience*

"Holly has an innate ability to make others feel known and loved. Whether it be walking through the different stages of pregnancy or stepping into parenthood, Holly is a person of peace and encouragement". - Emily

"I am beyond thankful that I had holly as my doula. Her support and encouragement leading up to my birth meant the world to me. And, I couldn't have had such a wonderful, unmedicated birth if it wasn't for her. Her affirmation, love and care during the delivery made all the difference." - Michele

"I am thankful for Holly's calm presence and gentle touch. Throughout my labor, Holly was a constant comfort as she massaged my lower back and provided ideas for achieving a greater comfort during the process of labor. She cheerfully worked through the night to help us have a healthy delivery. Not only is holly a wonderful doula, but she is a wonderful person all around and someone I admire and look up to." - Suzie
