The 3 R's of Childbirth and Motherhood Part 2: Dutch Oven Bread Recipe

On my last post (read here), I mentioned that in one of my weekly rhythms, I make a very simple dutch oven bread. I had a lot of people ask for the recipe so I thought I would share. I know this isn't specifically "doula" related but we all need an excuse to a) bake things and b) eat bread. It is incredibly simple for all you parents out there who don't have a ton of extra time on your hands and it's crispy and delicious. 

 

Dutch Oven Bread Recipe:


Ingredients:
3 cups of flour (I usually use 2 cups white, 1 wheat)
1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
1 teaspoon yeast
1 and 1/2 cups luke warm water

Stir dry ingredients together. Stir in water with wooden spoon (and use hands when necessary) should look like this when finished: 

 

 

Cover with plastic wrap and let rise 8  hours. Tip: if you have a little less then 8 hours or don't want to wait overnight, I turn the oven on and set the bowl on the oven, giving it a "boost" to rise faster.

When you are ready to bake, preheat oven to 450 degrees.

When oven is preheated, place Dutch oven with lid in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. 

While Dutch Oven is in oven, place dough on floured surface and make it more of a ball of dough.

Then take Dutch oven out and cover bottom lightly with olive oil and place bread dough in the Dutch Oven and place it back in the oven for 30 minutes with lid.

After 30 min, take lid off and let bread bake for 10-15 more minutes, taking it out when bread on top is golden brown.

 

 

 

Let it cool slightly, and have a slice with butter while still warm.
